SOULWAX IN JAPAN

David and Stephen travelled to Japan to promote the Much Against Everyone's Advice album (in 2000?) and made this photo report for the now defunct Mao Magazine.

Nowadays we all have 5 megapix camera's in our mobile phones, but back then Stephen used a CASIO wristwatch (!) to take these small pictures. The comments were written by Stephen.

From Brussels to Tokyo

david during the flight. we should get some more sleep and slow down on the dj-ing

jackie chan has his own cardboard which makes david very jealous. cardboards are cool!

Tokyo Shibuya by day: what a cultureshock! this is the real Japan

the lovely girls from japan..or is it pokemon?

The logo of A Bathing Ape, our favourite Japanese clothing brand. it is named after The Planet of the Apes

A display window with three mannequins representing the Beastie Boys. it's An idea by Cornelius, the Japanese Beck.

look: our names in japanese!

this is Junko (what a name?), the promogirl of our record company. (in japanese: 'so what's this all for?')

akkiko: 'look this doll looks exactly like Gunther Neefs! Tokyo humour!

(gunther neefs is a singer from belgium btw)

a Signed piece of cardboard for sending round the Japanese Record Shops. we also made one which said, 'For a good sumo wrestling time please call 0032 2255 etcetera.' That is the number of our manager.

david 'babe magnet' dewaele signing for lots of screaming Japanese groupies in the record shops. Insane!

an artistic picture of tokyo by night (or just too much sake)

akkiko is our promo girl and a big fan of all things french and 'nouvelle vague'. the way she pronounces 'Serge gainsbourg' or 'Jean Luc godard' sounds like she's from Ghent! too funny!

david during one of the many photo shoots. fashion hurts, baby!

one of the many photographers whose name I can't remember. probably something like 'san' or 'kun'.

viewsic television is japanese most popular music channel. here's the camera man.

(btw stephen made a joke here about a belgian football player, but probably noone would get it nowadays)

our poster for the japanese chops. i haven't got a clue what it says. probably something like 'scum from Ghent, hip in the uk!'

the info sheet for the japanese journalists. again no clue of what it says, but we do know that 'zaki' means 'annoying' in japanese. can't be a coincidence! Love u dad!

(zaki is their father's well known artist name in Belgium)

one of the many cardboards we've signed today. too many markerpens!

akkiko from the record company has to join us shopping in between the interviews, what a nasty job. but hey, tomorrow is our last day here, let's hope the credit card will hold on

david enjoying the meal at a korean bbq restaurant. koreans really like grilled cows tongue and stomach. we tourists have to wear a stupid paper skirt for some reason

we sign our own (import) single at the Zeist record store. afterwards they try to sell it back to us! but we do find 2 rare serge gainsbourg records here

someone screwed up at tower recors in shibuya: they've put us in the r&b section! no wonder we've only sold six records so far.
